There was a time when 44 Co-operative Rice Mills were registered in West Bengal. Long back most of these Societies took a very bad shape owing to the burden of levy rice imposed by the Government, coupled with dearth of working capital and obsolescence of plant & machinery consuming excessive fuel and returning lesser products. 17 of these Societies are now under liquidation and 22 are non-working, leaving only 5 working societies the performance of which is tabulated below:
