There are 7023 Primary Housing Co-operative Societies in West Bengal with 131941 Members and paid up share capital of Rs. 838.55 lakh. The State Co-operative Housing Federation Ltd. (HOUSEFED) with its 1044 affiliated primary societies has completed 8032 houses in rural areas and 10460 houses in urban areas upto 31.01.2007 where 421 members belonging to SC, ST & OBC have been benefited. The Federation has so far released fund of Rs 7704.00 lakhs to the members of its affiliated primary Housing societies for construction of houses.

In fact the co-operative housing societies have come forward to solve to a large extent the housing problems of different classes of people including Low Income Groups and Economically Weaker Section.
